America 2002

In 2002 I went on my first trip to America with three friends from University. We flew into New York and spent five days there seeing the sites such as Central Park, The Natural History Museum, Times Square, Battery Park, Broadway and the Empire State building. We had intended to go on a trip to Niagra Falls but the weather was absolutely terrible to we decided to stay in New York where there are at least indoor things to do.

To be honest I didn’t really like New York—spending five days in a smoggy concrete jungle with no fields and people forever rushing everywhere and beeping horns isn’t my idea of relaxing! Still, it was an experience. I just don’t see myself every going back.

From New York we took a Greyhound bus down to Washington DC where we stayed in a super expensive hotel for next to nothing as we found it on Expedia the day before! Washington was a great place to visit and we saw the White House, Congress, the Vietnam Memorial, the Aerospace Museum and a lot of the other monuments there. The only disappointment was that we were intending to go on the tour of the FBI building but it only runs during Summer!

We also accidentally went to a gay steak restaurant. Yeah, four straight Englishmen in a gay steak restaurant; we must have appeared to be in denial. Still, there were some very friendly men in there! Note to self: read Rough Guide before venturing out of hotel in a random direction, not after getting back.

From Washington DC we flew to Denver in Colorado, hired a car and spent several days driving around the Rocky Mountains. We went through the University town of Boulder where we got to oggle hot American college girls and also the beautiful mountain town of Estes Park where Stephen King stayed whilst writing ‘The Shining’. As you can image when me and ‘Stephen King’ tried to check into our room they thought we were taking the piss!

We then flew from Denver to Las Vegas and hired another car. After spending some time in Vegas we drove to the Grand Canyon and from there accidentally drove to San Diego. We were supposed to be driving back to Vegas but after passing a ‘Welcome to California’ sign realised that something had gone awry!

After spending a couple of days in San Diego visiting the famous Zoo and also the naval island of Coronado we took another Greyhound bus all the way up to San Francisco (not a journey I would like to repeat on a cramped bus!).

In San Francisco we visited the famous waterfront as well as Alcatraz prison, flying home from there a few days later.

So where are all the photos? Unfortunately the camera I had with me at the time was quite an early digital camera and the quality of the photos is terrible. Out of over a hundred these are the best few!
