The bathroom wasn’t in a bad condition at all, if anything it just wanted freshening up and making a little brighter:
I started by ripping out the carpet and then took down all the old fixtures and stripped the anaglypta off the walls.
I then painted the walls with some Johnstone’s ‘Carribbean Blue’ which I lightened a bit (found it on the scabby shelf in the local hardware shop).
I decided to re-panel the bath as the old panel had got quite damp; it was coated but nobody had bothered to put silicone round the joints so it had got wet on the side where it was fibrous.
I took the old panels off and constructed a timber frame around the inside of the bath. Once that was erected (yes, wood, erection, haha) I just tacked tounge and groove panelling around the sides. I also boxed in the back of the toilet to make it a bit neater and less of a dust trap.
I changed the bathroom taps for some more up to date ones—this is a good example of why the house took so long to do! It seems like such a small thing but I swear it took me a whole day to do this! Still, the new ones are much more modern and look great.
I painted the strip of mushroom tiles with some Ronseal ‘Porcelain Blue’ tile paint. It looks OK now but it was a pain in the arse to do. I masked the tiles above and below but of course the tape didn’t cover the grout so it dribbled down all the grout lines! I managed to scrape off the excess with a Stanley knife blade though.
I put up all new fixtures including a new shower screen, hose, head and riser, bathroom cabinet, toilet seat, cistern handle, mirror, shaver light, blind and towel rail.
Finally I glossed all the woodwork (including the tranparent glass in the door!) and varnished the new panelling. Then the carpet fitters put in carpet and that was it done apart from a new radiator which the heating engineer installed.
